Description
Publisher PolderVondsten Well found, the book about real estate agent and avid amateur archaeologist Martien Weel (1935-2011). Weel laid the foundation for his own collection of archaeological finds around 1950 and was subsequently active for decades. Decades in which (amateur) archaeology in the Netherlands changed dramatically. The large-scale earthmoving and the numerous sites that emerged as a result, the establishment of the AWN, the appointment of city archaeologists, the discovery of the metal detector, new legislation... In the period when Weel went out armed with a shovel, boots and (later) a detector, it was not only the hobby digging itself that changed, but also the way this pastime was viewed. All those years of collecting, searching and finding by Martien Weel form a wonderful basis to unfold the development of our (amateur) archaeology.

The book "Goed gevonden" (Well Found) is a small history of (amateur) archaeology in the Netherlands, but above all it tells the life story of a happy digger. Also above ground: all finds, and there are many hundreds of them, were carefully identified and archived. This book reveals the most beautiful and most special: from coins, insignia and belt fittings to stoneware, pottery, tiles and glass. Follow in Weel's footsteps and join him through the years during his searches in Medemblik, Hoorn and Amsterdam, among others. How did he work? Where was he digging? What is the history of these fruitful sites? And: what unforgettable treasure finds were unearthed elsewhere in the Netherlands?
